Looking back at the smart industry 2018
As we wrap up a great and productive year for Stratus Technologies, we look back on some of the exciting events we attended that made 2018 so worthwhile. One of them was the 4th Annual Smart Industry Conference in Chicago, Illinois at the end of September.
Session after session, speakers pointed to the need for
massive adoption of robust IIoT solutions to improve productivity. Check out an
overview of some of the Smart Industry 2018 presentations below:
Control
In his keynote presentation at Smart Industries 2018, Jason
talked about how IIoT offers tremendous potential to address the increased
complexity of industrial computing as the landscape becomes more digitalized.
As IIoT gains traction, edge computing will play a key role
in keeping manufacturers competitive in the face of growing pressures, including
the need for real-time decision making and higher levels of efficiency,
productivity and quality. Stratus is replying to this demand with products such
as the ztC Edge, which provides a redundant computing platform that can be
installed and maintained by OT personnel.
Note that many operations rely on legacy production systems
that are expensive and unrealistic to replace all at once. Jason drew from his
years of experience in IIoT and edge computing deployments to share how steps
such as investing in virtualization, emphasizing interoperability, and
prioritizing simple yet powerful edge infrastructure will help manufacturers
succeed in their digital transformation efforts. , which will lead to an upsurge
in the value of their products. operations.
Air Liquide Technical Expertise Center, Process Control
Technology Director
At another highly attended session, Smart Industry 2018,
Arnold "Marty" Martin talked about the need to convert thousands of
manned installations into unmanned ones. This can only be done by collection
data at the edge and instantly sharing it with Air Liquide OT specialists
around the world. “The gases we produce are essential for their operation,”
Martin said. "If we sneeze, they get colds."
Digitization is at the heart of all of these strategic
imperatives, and Martin is currently responsible for modernizing and
standardizing the automation approach used in his “mini-factories,” which
currently use a jumble of automation platforms deployed and acquired over the years.
In his performance, he talked about how the company is using technologies such
as virtualization, advanced process management, procedural automation,
predictive analytics, asset performance management, and remote monitoring to
improve performance and reliability. “We are positioning ourselves so that we
can better use our data - without harming the bank,” concluded Martin.
Product Management and Digital Solutions
How to cope with the projected shortage of 85 million
high-skilled and mid-sized workers worldwide by 2020? Paperer said it is
difficult for manufacturers to hire in-house technicians to ensure equipment
reliability. Instead, industrial companies are looking for new ways to avoid
production disruptions, predict preventive maintenance requirements, and keep
equipment running smoothly to maximize profits.
Problems and trends of this type require increased labor productivity, which can be solved by introducing reliable IIoT technologies. This will require the elimination of complexity from availability so that implementation can primarily be performed by OT personnel with the assistance required by IT
